The Breed

Welsh Black Cattle are descended from cattle of Pre-roman times, and are the true native breed of Wales. They have been shown to perform in a wide range of situations, being ideal on the lowlands with excellent beef breeding qualities and good killing out weights. They are also found in the mountainous terrains of Wales.

The Welsh Black animals' reputation is based on its ability to thrive on marginal and upland areas, it is in these mountain farms that its hardiness, ease of calving and mothering abilities assures its success.

The cows' ability to rear a quality calf every year, while also thriving herself is her key to popularity. The Welsh Blacks' ability to convert rough grazing to top quality milk for calves and then on to top quality beef ensures its as popular now as its ever been as the Welsh Black fits easily within all modern farming methods.

Welsh Black Cattle are firm favorites within the environmental scheme ‘Tir Gofal' as their light grazing helps protect and encourage wildlife and their habitats to recover from past harsh intensive farming methods. It is these abilities that have sustained strong demand for the pedigree Welsh Black and provide profitable opportunities for new and existing Welsh Black breeders.
