Llun Y Pasg - Easter Monday
A dry spell after a terribly wet fortnight, Torrential rain lasting for days and through the nights. Snow, ice and bitter winds have been the norm for the last two weeks and even lambs of 3 weeks old failed to survive these conditions.
For the first time ever we brought around a hundred ewes with their twin lambs back into the warmth and dry of the lambing sheds. We were very concerned that some mix ups and mis-mothering would occur, but very quickly all the lambs had found their mums and were happy to be in the dry.
Only nine ewes are left to lamb now so the end is in sight
Calving is underway and so far a good mix of males and females, mostly born at night or in the early hours of the morning, Why?
With the waitrose supermarkets constant need for welsh Black beef we are under pressure to keep a constant supply.
Its good to know that top quality welsh food is in such demand and as the Welsh Black Beef must be born, reared, fattened and killed in Wales, therefore avoiding travelling the long distances which helps to reduce our carbon footprint
A litter of kune Kune piglets were last months big surprise although we thought maybe the gilt was in pig we had seen no action and therefore had no dates so on Mothering Sunday as well as my cards I also had the litter of seven piglets as a bonus surprise. Absolutely lovely, all different colours.
We are well behind with the spring work on the fields, but as the country takes a break over the Easter holidays, we are having an afternoon off, a little nap maybe.
